[Women] are essential to guarantee a more sustainable, egalitarian and inclusive model, in which green entrepreneurship becomes a strategic issue. However, only one in ten green entrepreneurs in Spain is a woman, although their income is similar to that of male green entrepreneurs. -- Women’s green entrepreneurship and women’s entrepreneurship in rural areas report
Led by the Gender Equality Unit of Spain’s Ministry for the Ecologic Transition and the Demographic Challenge, this initiative targets women’s green entrepreneurship and rural business endeavours. It aims to refine gender-sensitive statistical data and enrich insights into women’s roles in the ecological transition, especially in rural settings.
In the context of the Spanish strategic plan for the effective equality of women and men (2022–2025), the initiative aligns with the European Green Deal, the Spanish recovery, transformation and resilience plan and the Spanish just transition strategy. It considers gender equality crucial in statistics and research, an attitude supported by Spain’s leading role in gender-sensitive statistical production and dissemination as noted in EIGE’s 2023 report The Pathway to Progress: Strengthening effective structures for gender equality and gender mainstreaming in the EU.
The project’s activities include:
- developing and disseminating sex-disaggregated indicators and gender-sensitive analysis across the green entrepreneurship and rural business sectors;
- conducting comparative studies with other EU countries and temporal analyses to track progress;
- utilising diverse data sources such as the Spanish Labour Force Survey, the EU Labour Force Survey and the Gender Entrepreneurship Monitor to gain in-depth insights.
